THE ELEMENTS OF THOUGHT

  1. PURPOSE
    1. I understand "purpose" your primary goal or objective. 
    2. In other words, the reason why we exist.
    3. An example of someone exhibiting purpose using social media would be a Native Hawaiian activist protesting the construction of the 30-meter telescope on Mauna Kea because it desecrates their sacred land.  Their purpose is to defend their land and what is sacred to them.

 

  1. QUESTION
    1. I understand "question" to mean providing the foundations on trying to solve a problem or issue.
    2. In other words, whenever you have a question you are trying to solve, you want to make sure your question is clear and not opinion based.  
    3. An example of someone exhibiting questioning using social media would be someone creating a discord thread asking their audience what are some good study habits and why?

 

  1. ASSUMPTIONS
    1. I understand "assumptions" to mean our unconscious thoughts that we don’t pay much attention to but are often biased or based on prejudice or stereotypes.
    2. In other words, assuming all black people are good at sports or that the ideal person is blonde with blue eyes.
    3. An example of someone exhibiting assumptions using social media would be someone who posts a video showing them having their child hold up a sign saying that I cheated on my math test and assuming that parent is being abusive to their child.  

 

  1. POINT OF VIEW
    1. I understand "point of view" to mean the way we interpret a situation.
    2. In other words, everyone has a perspective on how they view reality, but a great critical thinker can look at the point of view of others and be willing to listen and change their point of view if it’s reasonable.
    3. An example of someone exhibiting a point of view using social media would someone making a posting the picture of the Times’ cover of the picture of The Falling Man and seeing it as beautiful moment, whereas someone can see that same picture and interpret it as being sad seeing someone jumping from a building.

 

  1. DATA, INFORMATION, and EVIDENCE.
    1. I understand "DATA, INFORMATION, and EVIDENCE." to mean what we use to validate our question. 
    2. In other words, we gather data, information, and evidence we are trying to answer a question, taking to account all data and evidence not just what suits your answer.
    3. An example of someone exhibiting data, information or evidence using social media would be someone posting a tik tok video saying that they were originally planning on coming to Hawaii for vacation, but since the start of covid, have been following the state’s news and data on the rise of  covid cases in the population and how it’s affecting their hospitals and have decided, based on the data and information, and evidence shown, not to vacation in Hawaii at this time.

 

  1. CONCEPTS and IDEAS.
    1. I understand "CONCEPTS and IDEAS." to mean our thoughts and how we think
    2. In other words, concepts and ideas help us explain something to our audience in a way that makes sense.
    3. An example of someone exhibiting concepts and ideas using social media would be someone posting a YouTube video of ASMR sounds because they had an idea ASMR can help people who are suffering from insomnia relax and fall asleep.

 

  1. INFERENCES or INTERPRETATIONS by which we draw CONCLUSIONS
    1. I understand "inferences and interpretations" to mean the way we make things make sense in our mind based on evidence and facts.
    2. In other words, once we pose a question and gather our data and evidence, we can conclude without a doubt our answer.
    3. An example of someone exhibiting inferences and interpretations using social media would be someone making a post about China becoming an economic power based on the facts and evidence they provided.

 

  1. IMPLICATIONS and CONSEQUENCES.
    1. I understand what "implications and consequences" to mean the outcome of your actions based on your decision.
    2. In other words, whether we expected the situation to be resolved in the way it was, we must live with the choices that were made.
    3. An example of someone exhibiting the implications and consequences of using social media would be saying that when George Zimmerman was acquitted of all charges in his role in the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, that started the use of hashtag #blacklivesmatter.  
  2. The purpose of the assignment is to understand critical thinking and how interpret the elements of thinking and the role is plays in social media.

 

  1. The key question at the heart of the assignment is how I interpret fact from opinion and what is the message I’m trying to convey on social media?
